  • Heavy drinking can cause liver cirrhosis, immune system problems, and brain damage; it also increases the risk for certain cancers such as liver, esophagus and the throat.
  • There is no solid evidence which indicates that people can become addicted to spirits more easily than beer or wine, but hard liquor is more likely to produce death in instances of alcohol overdoses.
  • Current drinking during the previous month among persons aged 18 to 20 years declined significantly from 59% in 1985 to 40% in 1991, coincident with states adopting an age 21 minimum legal drinking age, but increased to 47% by 1999.
  • The overwhelming majority of youth (74% of 8-17 year-olds; 74% of 8-12 year-olds; 74% of 13-17 year-olds) cite their parents as the primary influence in their decisions about whether they drink alcohol or not.
