  • Signs of alcohol intoxication include the smell of alcohol on the breath or skin, glazed or bloodshot eyes, the person being unusually passive or argumentative, and/or a deterioration in the person's appearance or hygiene.
  • Alcohol's general depressant effects can prolong the duration of periods of apnea, worsening any preexisting Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
  • Alcohol is made as plant sugars in fruits come into contact with a fungus called yeast and they begin to ferment; as they rot, they will excrete a toxic substance called ethanol or ethyl alcohol--or simply alcohol. In the fermentation process, the yeast continues to feed on the plant sugars, thus the alcohol concentration levels rise; once these levels get closer to 14 percent, the yeast dies, quite literally, of alcohol poisoning.
  • Heavy bouts of drinking can result in an individual experiencing a condition that is commonly referred to as a"hangover", which may include headache, nausea, shakiness, and sometimes vomiting. This condition is due partly to alcohol poisoning and partly to the body's reaction to withdrawal from alcohol. There is currently no effective cure for this condition beyond refraining from heavy alcohol consumption.
